Phylogenetic Underpinning of Groundwater Use by Trees

چکیده
Root water uptake (RWU) strategies shape climate-vegetation feedbacks and ecosystem productivity. A fundamental relationship between RWU evolutionary histories (phylogeny) of trees, however, remains poorly understood. Establishing a phylogenetic basis for tree RWU, particularly groundwater use, could improve their representation in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs) that are crucial understanding hydrologic responses to climate perturbations. We explored possible bases using two independent data sets: (a) observed root local depths representing 502 species, (b) groundwater, soil, xylem isotopic evidence 412 species. Maximum rooting (RDMAX), the ratio RDMAX mean table depth (WT) (RDMAX/WT), showed significant signals, suggesting more similar among closely related Our findings may be used parameterize species-level TBMs, data-poor regions.

Shallow Groundwater Use by Alfalfa
Disposal of saline drainage water is a significant problem for irrigated agriculture. One proposal is to recycle drainage water to irrigate salt tolerant crops until the volume has been reduced sufficiently to enable final disposal by evaporation. Part of this concept requires in-situ crop water use from shallow groundwater; and data is needed to quantify the potential use of groundwater by alt...
متن کاملPhylogenetic trees
We introduce the package PhylogeneticTrees for Macaulay2 which allows users to compute phylogenetic invariants for group-based tree models. We provide some background information on phylogenetic algebraic geometry and show how the package PhylogeneticTrees can be used to calculate a generating set for a phylogenetic ideal as well as a lower bound for its dimension. Finally, we show how methods ...
متن کاملVisualizing Phylogenetic Trees by Spring-Embedder Models
A phylogenetic tree is a graphical representation of the evolutionary relationship between taxonomic groups. The term phylogeny refers to the evolution or historical development of a plant or animal species, or even a human tribe or similar group. In order to make ourself to understand the structure of phylogenetic tree. We present a spring-embedder model for drawing rooted and unrooted phyloge...
متن کاملVisualization of Phylogenetic Trees
We present a spring-embedder model for drawing rooted and unrooted phylogenetic trees with straight edges. Our heuristic strives for uniform edge lengths, and we develop it in analogy to forces in natural systems, for a simple, elegant, conceptually intuitive, and efficient algorithm. These algorithms are implemented on a web-based phylogeny visualization system that interoperates with existing...
